Not only are the upcoming fashion trends for Autumn / Winter taking macabre turn, that too can be said of the beauty trends. Whilst deep wine coloured lips feature almost every year as a trend, from berry to burgundy to black cherry, most strikingly this season were the jet black lips seen at the Giles show, written about on Nouvelle Noire here

All models received the black lip treatment, about finish and texture varied from opaque matte to semi-sheer glosses.

Black lips were also seen at the S/S14 Mark Fast show, featured here. However Gile's developed the trend to be more grown-up goth and wearable rather than looking as though you're just super excited for Hallowe'en next month.

Whilst cheap black lipsticks will be in abundance on the run-up to Hallowe'en, several brands cater for those daring to try the onyx lip, with products to suit every budget.

Barry M, drugstore favourite, offer the cheapest and most attainable black with their offering that's under a fiver. Although it's pretty opaque, the finish is patchy and shiny. It has a tendency to slide, so a black eyeliner as lip liner is advisable. Great for those wanting to give the trend a go, but might not want it to be a new signature look.

High Street giants, and midrange beauty brand, Topshop, brought out their best selling 'velvet lips' product in the shade 'Raven', perhaps on homage to the Edgar Allan Poe poem of the same name. 'Raven' is a a glossy looking liquid that dries to becomes a matte finish, speckled with emerald glitter. Slightly more expensive, at £10, however the finish is far more fashion forward.

Finally, makeup mavens M.A.C Cosmetics have several products that can be used to create the black lip look. Firstly, their Lipmix in Black gives a long-lasting, glossier finish, while their discontinued - but likely to come back for special events, most recently Black Friday- lipstick in Hautecore, which gives an opaque and matte finish. For a subtle black sheen they also have they Cremesheen Lipglass in 'Dark Outsider', which comes at a prices £17.50, but is great if you want to embrace a trend without channeling your inner Wednesday Addams.
